Why can/can't South Africa's economy grow at 8%?

by Fcronje@sairr.org.za — last modified 2008-04-25 09:01 — expired

The recent Eskom crisis has seen a number of economists revise their growth forecasts for South Africa downwards. But even before the electricity crisis a number of growth constraints including inflation, the education system, skills, labour market policy, international oil prices, crime, and infrastructure had been cited as constraints to growth. A number of developing economies managed to achieve growth rates in excess of the 4%-5% achieved by South Africa during a period of unprecedented commodity boom. Attend this breakfast with your guests and clients to find out if South Africa could have grown faster and what needs to be done to maintain high growth rates into the future.
